What does a doctor do to remove an ingrown toenail?

I have an ingrown toenail on my left big toe. It hurts extremely bad. I tried cutting it out last night but couldn't get it and it only made it worse. Im considering going to a doctor to have it removed. What would the doctor do to remove it? Would he numb it before he removed it?What does a doctor do to remove an ingrown toenail?
Dear Alexis,

My son had this done three times...

Learn from his mistake, as it is extremely painful.

But honestly, the doctor will have to remove your toenail completely. I know that sounds rough but that is the only way if you understand the nail growth.

They do give your toe several shots before they do this.

You will have to be off of your feet for about four to five days.

My son always had them done on a Friday afternoon, to have the weekend and a few days to heal.

Never cut your toenails round, they must be cut straight across to prevent this from happening again, because it can grow back again.

And do not avoid going to the doctor, because the very first time this happend to my son, he let it go too long and by the time he went to the doctor he had some gangreen on his toe.

It was very little and needed to be cut out, you cant tell now but it was a lesson learned.

Cost with no insurance is about 150 U.S. dollars

My dad had the same problem. The doctor would numb it then cut the skin and slice the ingrown nail off. It will hurt for a few days but its worth it.

It costs about 拢50-75, it could happen again in the future so may have to back

Hope that helped.
They put a little turniquet around the base of the toe to stop the blood flow and they numb the toe and then surgically remove the ingrown nail from the nailbed all the way to the root - so it can never grow back.
