What are the chances of a three year old having an ingrown toenail?

Ive never even had one, but my three year old's big toe is totally swollen, and there's a spot behind the nail (not underneath) that's greenish, looks like there's pus under there. Im assuming its an ingrown toenail, i cant think of anything else. Going to the pediatrician on monday, but is this common? Whats the treatment? What are the chances of a three year old having an ingrown toenail?
My Daughter gets them and my Husband and his Dad have problems with ingrown toenails. My Husband had surgery on one.

My Daughter recently had one that turned green too and I just put neosporin on it and covered it up with severla bandaids and by the second day it had popped open and drained. By the end of the week the dead skin was peeling off and she was fine again. I was able to get in there and cut that nail right. She cannot wear shoes that hit her on the toe nails or press against them for long periods of time.

I try to keep socks on her feet too and this helps her not to knock her nails and irritate them. What are the chances of a three year old having an ingrown toenail?
Ingrown nails are very common and they can occur in all ages. Improper trimming of the nail is the main cause of ingrown nails. Cutting the nail on an angle or curved or too short can all lead to ingrown nails. The treatment depends on the severity of the growth and the level of infection. Antibiotics will probably be used. There are ways to treat minor ingrown nails at home, but if it's severe it will need surgery to remove. The surgery is quick and simple; the toe is numbed and the ingrown piece is cut out. A piece of the nail root may be removed as well so the nail does not grow back in that area, however that usually only happens with chronic ingrown nails. Usually removing the ingrown piece is all that needs to be done.
